Centauri
Alpha Centauri (also known as Rigil Kentaurus) is a triple star system located in the constellation Centaurus, approximately 4.37 light-years from the Sun. The Alpha Centauri system consists of three stars, two of which are visible to the naked eye. The brightest star of the system, Alpha Centauri A, is a yellow-white main-sequence star similar to the Sun but larger and brighter, while Alpha Centauri B, the dimmer of the two, is an orange-red main-sequence star that is slightly smaller and less bright than the Sun. Alpha Centauri A and B orbit each other closely with an orbital period of 79.91 years. The third star, Alpha Centauri C (also known as Proxima Centauri) is a red dwarf star that orbits both upwards of 4,000 AU (1 AU is the distance between Earth and the Sun) with an orbital period estimated to be millions of years. The celestial coordinates of Alpha Centauri can be found at the star catalogue identifier 1850 RD001.
