MAX1617 Remote/Local Temperature Sensor with SMBus Serial Interface General Description Features The MAX1617 is a precise digital thermometer that Two Channels: Measures Both Remote and Local reports the temperature of both a remote sensor and its Temperatures own package. The remote sensor is a diode-connected No Calibration Required transistortypically a low-cost, easily mounted 2N3904 SMBus 2-Wire Serial Interface NPN typethat replaces conventional thermistors or Programmable Under/Overtemperature Alarms thermocouples. Remote accuracy is 3C for multiple transistor manufacturers, with no calibration needed. The Supports SMBus Alert Response remote channel can also measure the die temperature of Accuracy: other ICs, such as microprocessors, that contain an on- 2C (+60C to +100C, local) chip, diode-connected transistor. 3C (-40C to +125C, local) The 2-wire serial interface accepts standard System 3C (+60C to +100C, remote) Management Bus (SMBus) Write Byte, Read Byte, Send 3A (typ) Standby Supply Current Byte, and Receive Byte commands to program the alarm 70A (max) Supply Current in Auto-Convert Mode thresholds and to read temperature data. The data format is 7 bits plus sign, with each bit corresponding to 1C, in +3V to +5.5V Supply Range twos-complement format. Measurements can be done Small, 16-Pin QSOP Package automatically and autonomously, with the conversion rate programmed by the user or programmed to operate in a single-shot mode. The adjustable rate allows the user to control the supply-current drain. The MAX1617 is available in a small, 16-pin QSOP Ordering Information surface-mount package. PART TEMP.
