MAX16550A Integrated Protection IC on 12V Bus with an MAX16550B Integrated MOSFET, Lossless Current Sensing, and PMBus Interface General Description Benefits and Features The MAX16550A/MAX16550B are protection ICs with Three Options: an integrated low-resistance MOSFET and lossless MAX16550A: 30A Protection with 8A Startup current-sense circuitry featuring SMBus/PMBus control MAX16550B: 30A Protection with 16A Startup and reporting. The ICs are designed to provide the optimum High-Density (4mm x 4.5mm for 30A): Less than 25% solution for distribution, control, monitoring and protection of of the Board Area of Conventional Solutions the systems 12V power supply. An internal LDO provides Monolithic Integration of Power, Control, and Monitoring the supply voltage for the protection IC. Integrated Power MOSFET with 1.9m Total Resistance If no fault is detected, the ICs initiate the startup and have in 12V Power Path (R Including Package) DS(ON) Integrated Lossless, Precise Current Sensing been designed to provide controlled, monotonic startup. Programmable soft-start ramp and delay is implemented Integrated LDO Provides V Supply DD (1.8V Bias Suppy) to limit the in-rush current during startup. Enables Advanced System Power Management The ICs monitor the current and voltage of the 12V system power rail and provide multiple levels of protection with fast PMBus/SMBus Telemetry with Extensive Status Monitoring and Reporting turn-off if a fault is detected. Load Current Indicator (ILOAD) Pin Provides Maxims patented, lossless current sense provides high Analog Output Current Reporting with High Accuracy accuracy current sensing over load and temperature, Programmable Soft-Start for Inrush Current Limiting improving overall system-energy efficiency, and reducing Increases Power-Supply Reliability with IC Self- dissipation. Protection Features If, at any time, the output voltage falls below the programmable Very Fast Fault Detection and Isolation output undervoltage-lockout threshold, the PWRGD signal is V to V Short Protection During Startup IN OUT asserted low. If at any time the input voltage falls below the Overtemperature Protection programmable input undervoltage-lockout threshold, the Three Levels of Overcurrent Protection PWRGD signal is asserted low.
