Evaluates: MAX17480 19-4649 Rev 0 5/09 MAX17480 Evaluation Kit General Description Features The MAX17480 evaluation kit (EV kit) demonstrates the Dual/Triple-Output, Fixed-Frequency Controller high-power, triple-output notebook CPU application cir- AMD Mobile SVI-Compliant Serial Interface cuit for the AMD mobile serial VID interface (SVI) CPU core supplies. This DC-DC converter steps down high- 0 to 1.550V Output-Voltage Range (7-Bit On-Board voltage batteries and/or AC adapters, generating preci- DAC) sion, low-voltage CPU cores. The MAX17480 EV kit Core SMPS meets the AMD mobile SVI CPUs transient voltage specification, power-good signaling, voltage-regulator Split or Combinable Outputs Detected at thermal monitoring (VRHOT), and power-good output Power-Up (PWRGD). The MAX17480 EV kit consists of one dual- True Out-of-Phase Operation Reduces Input phase high-current switched-mode power supply Capacitance (SMPS) for the CPU core (VCORE0) and one 4A internal Transient Phase Repeat Reduces Output switch SMPS for the northbridge (NB) core. The two Capacitance CPU core SMPSs run 180 out-of-phase for true inter- Dynamic Phase Selection Optimizes Active/ leaved operation, minimizing input capacitance. Sleep Efficiency Output voltages are dynamically changed through a Programmable AC and DC Droop 2-wire serial interface, allowing the switching regulators 7V to 24V Input-Voltage Range to be individually programmed to different voltages. A 36A Load-Current Capability (18A Each Phase) programmable slew-rate controller enables controlled Accurate Current Balance and Current Limit transitions between VID codes. SVI also allows each 300kHz Switching Frequency (Per Phase) regulator to be individually set into a low-power pulse- Output Overvoltage Fault Protection skipping state. NB SMPS Soft-start limits the inrush current, and passive shut- 4A Load-Current Capability for Northbridge down discharges the output voltage back down to zero Core without any negative ring. The MAX17480 EV kit 600kHz Switching Frequency for Northbridge includes active voltage positioning with adjustable gain, reducing power dissipation and bulk output capaci- Power-Good (PWRGD) and Thermal-Fault tance requirements. The MAX17480 includes latched (VRHOT) Output Indicators output undervoltage fault protection, overvoltage fault System Power-OK (PGD IN) Input protection for the CPU cores, and thermal-overload pro- tection. It also includes a voltage-regulator power-good Undervoltage Fault Protection (PWRGD) output. 40-Pin Thin QFN Package (5mm x 5mm) This fully assembled and tested PCB provides a digital- ly adjustable 0 to 1.550V output-voltage range (7-bit on- Lead(Pb)-Free and RoHS Compliant board DAC) from a 7V to 24V battery input range. Each Fully Assembled and Tested phase of the core current SMPS operates at 300kHz switching frequency and delivers up to 18A output cur- rent for a total of 36A.
