MAX3316EMAX3319E 19-1616 Rev 1 6/00 15kV ESD-Protected, 2.5V, 1A, 460kbps, RS-232 Compatible Transceivers General Description Features The MAX3316EMAX3319E are 2.5V powered RS-232 ESD Protection for RS-232 I/O Pins compatible transceivers. These devices feature shut- 15kVHuman Body Model down (MAX3317E), AutoShutdown Plus (MAX3318E/ 8kVIEC 1000-4-2, Contact Discharge MAX3319E), and enhanced electrostatic discharge 15kVIEC 1000-4-2, Air-Gap Discharge (ESD) protection integrated into the chip. All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are protected to 15kV 300A Operating Supply Current using the IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge method, 1A Low-Power Shutdown with Receivers Active 8kV using the IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge Guaranteed 460kbps Data Rate method, and 15kV using the Human Body Model. All devices are guaranteed at a data rate of 460kbps. Guaranteed 4V/s Slew Rate The transceivers have a proprietary low-dropout trans- RS-232 Compatible Down to 2.25V mitter output stage enabling RS-232 compatible opera- tion from a +2.25V to +3.0V supply with a dual charge Ordering Information pump. The charge pump requires only four 0.1F capacitors. The MAX3318E/MAX3319E feature a logic- PART TEMP. RANGE PIN-PACKAGE level output (READY) that asserts when the charge MAX3316ECUP 0C to +70C 20 TSSOP pump is regulating and the device is ready to begin MAX3316ECAE 0C to +70C 16 SSOP transmitting. MAX3316EEUP -40C to +85C 20 TSSOP The MAX3318E/MAX3319E achieve a 1A supply current MAX3316EEAE -40C to +85C 16 SSOP using Maxims revolutionary AutoShutdown Plus feature. MAX3317ECUP 0C to +70C 20 TSSOP These devices automatically enter a low-power shut- down mode when the RS-232 cable is disconnected or MAX3317ECAP 0C to +70C 20 SSOP the transmitters of the connected peripherals are inactive MAX3317EEUP -40C to +85C 20 TSSOP for more than 30 seconds. They turn on again when MAX3317EEAP -40C to +85C 20 SSOP they sense a valid transition at any transmitter or receiver MAX3318ECUP 0C to +70C 20 TSSOP input. AutoShutdown Plus saves power without MAX3318ECAP 0C to +70C 20 SSOP changes to the existing BIOS or operating system. The MAX3317E also features a 1A shutdown mode that MAX3318EEUP -40C to +85C 20 TSSOP can be entered by driving SHDN low. The MAX3317Es MAX3318EEAP -40C to +85C 20 SSOP receivers remain active while in shutdown mode, allowing MAX3319ECAE 0C to +70C 16 SSOP external devices such as modems to be monitored MAX3319EEAE -40C to +85C 16 SSOP using only 1A supply current.
