MAX5174/MAX5176 19-1475 Rev 0 4/99 Low-Power, Serial, 12-Bit DACs with Voltage Output General Description Features The MAX5174/MAX5176 low-power, serial, voltage-out- 1 LSB INL put, 12-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) feature a 1A Shutdown Current precision output amplifier in a space-saving 16-pin Glitch Free Output Voltage at Power-Up QSOP package. The MAX5174 operates from a single +5V supply, and the MAX5176 operates from a single Single-Supply Operation +3V supply. Both devices draw only 280A of supply +5V (MAX5174) current, which reduces to 1A in shutdown. In addition, +3V (MAX5176) the programmable power-up reset feature allows for a Full-Scale Output Range user-selectable output voltage state of either 0 or mid- +2.048V (MAX5176, V = +1.25V) REF scale. +4.096V (MAX5174, V = +2.5V ) REF The 3-wire, digital, serial interface is compatible with Rail-to-Rail Output Amplifier SPI/QSPI, and MICROWIRE standards. An input register followed by a DAC register provides a double- Adjustable Output Offset buffered input, allowing the input and DAC registers to Low THD (-80dB) in Multiplying Operation be updated independently or simultaneously with a 16- bit serial word. Additional features include software and SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-Compatible 3-Wire Serial hardware shutdown, shutdown lockout, a hardware Interface clear pin, and a reference input capable of accepting Programmable Shutdown Mode and Power-Up DC and offset AC signals. These devices provide a pro- Reset grammable digital output pin for added functionality and a serial-data output pin for daisy-chaining. All logic Buffered Output Capable of Driving 5k 100pF inputs are TTL/CMOS compatible and are internally Loads buffered with Schmitt triggers to allow direct interfacing User-Programmable Digital Output Pin Allows to optocouplers. Serial Control of External Components The MAX5174/MAX5176 incorporate a proprietary on- 14-Bit Upgrades Available (MAX5170/MAX5172) chip circuit that keeps the output voltage virtually glitch free, limiting the glitches to a few millivolts dur- Ordering Information ing power-up. Both devices are available in 16-pin QSOP packages INL PART TEMP. RANGE PIN-PACKAGE and are specified for the extended (-40C to +85C) (LSB) temperature range.
