MAX5175/MAX5177 19-1477 Rev 0 4/99 Low-Power, Serial, 12-Bit DACs with Force/Sense Voltage Output General Description Features The MAX5175/MAX5177 low-power, serial, voltage-out- 1 LSB INL put, 12-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) feature a 1A Shutdown Current precision output amplifier in a space-saving 16-pin Glitch Free Output Voltage at Power-Up QSOP package. The MAX5175 operates from a single +5V supply, and the MAX5177 operates from a single Single-Supply Operation +3V supply. The output amplifiers inverting input is +5V (MAX5175) available to allow specific gain configurations, remote +3V (MAX5177) sensing, and high output current capability. This makes Full-Scale Output Range the MAX5175/MAX5177 ideal for a wide range of appli- +2.048V (MAX5177, V = +1.25V) cations, including industrial process control. Both REF devices draw only 260A of supply current, which +4.096V (MAX5175, V = +2.5V) REF reduces to 1A in shutdown mode. In addition, the pro- Rail-to-Rail Output Amplifier grammable power-up reset feature allows for a user- Adjustable Output Offset selectable output voltage state of either 0 or midscale. Low THD (-80dB) in Multiplying Operation The 3-wire serial interface is compatible with SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE standards. An input register SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-Compatible 3-Wire followed by a DAC register provides a double-buffered Serial Interface input, allowing the registers to be updated independent- Programmable Shutdown Mode and Power-Up ly or simultaneously with a 16-bit serial word. Additional Reset (0 or midscale) features include software and hardware shutdown, shut- down lockout, a hardware reset pin, and a reference Buffered Output Capable of Driving 420mA or input capable of accepting DC and offset AC signals. 5k 100pF Loads These devices provide a programmable digital output User-Programmable Digital Output Pin Allows pin for added functionality and a serial-data output pin Serial Control of External Components for daisy-chaining. All logic inputs are TTL/CMOS com- patible and are internally buffered with Schmitt triggers 14-Bit Upgrades Available (MAX5171/MAX5173) to allow direct interfacing to optocouplers. The MAX5175/MAX5177 incorporate a proprietary on-chip Ordering Information circuit that keeps the output voltage virtually glitch free, INL limiting the glitches to a few millivolts during power-up.
