MAX7219/MAX7221 Serially Interfaced, 8-Digit LED Display Drivers General Description Features The MAX7219/MAX7221 are compact, serial input/out- 10MHz Serial Interface put common-cathode display drivers that interface Individual LED Segment Control microprocessors (Ps) to 7-segment numeric LED dis- plays of up to 8 digits, bar-graph displays, or 64 indi- Decode/No-Decode Digit Selection vidual LEDs. Included on-chip are a BCD code-B 150A Low-Power Shutdown (Data Retained) decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8x8 static RAM that stores each digit. The MAX7221 is compatible with SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE, and has slew- Drive Common-Cathode LED Display rate-limited segment drivers to reduce EMI. Slew-Rate Limited Segment Drivers A convenient 4-wire serial interface connects to all for Lower EMI (MAX7221) common Ps. Individual digits may be addressed and updated without rewriting the entire display. The SPI, QSPI, MICROWIRE Serial Interface (MAX7221) MAX7219/MAX7221 also allow the user to select code- 24-Pin DIP and SO Packages B decoding or no-decode for each digit. The devices include a 150A low-power shutdown Ordering Information mode, analog and digital brightness control, a scan- limit register that allows the user to display from 1 to 8 PART TEMP RANGE PIN-PACKAGE digits, and a test mode that forces all LEDs on.
