Bernstein composed music for many different kinds of performances, including symphonies, ballets, musical theater, opera, chorus, chamber music, and film scores. Perhaps his best-known works are the musical West Side Story and the three-part symphony Mass. He also wrote many pieces of choral music, including Chichester Psalms and Choruses from The Lark, Chichester Psalms, and Songfest. He wrote several movie scores, such as On the Waterfront and The Magnificent Seven. He wrote three books, The Joy of Music, The Unanswered Question, and Findings. He served as a music educator and conductor of the New York Philharmonic for many years. He also helped influence upcoming composers in the 1960s and 1970s. Throughout his career, he received 14 Academy Award Nominations, 7 Emmy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.
