's philosophy
BPPP 1255 (Black Political Participation: The Politics of Inclusion) is an interdisciplinary course that explores the history, strategies, and theory of black political participation. It examines the political foundations of African American self-determination and empowerment. It also introduces students to the various public and private strategies used to advance the rights and interests of African Americans. The course looks at the role of race, identity, class and gender in shaping the African American experience. Topics also include voter mobilization and mobilization of community resources, protest and demonstrations, intergroup coalitions, identity politics and other forms of political action. The course looks at the impact of governmental policies and initiatives on African Americans. It examines the history of the civil rights movement and the current debates and struggles over race, justice, and opportunities in a diverse society.
