790-1360 is part of the half-century period known as the Concordian period in French history. Much of it was focused on the struggle between the papacy and the monarchy and their respective supporters, particularly the House of Valois and the Capetian House of Paris. During this period, the University of Paris, which had been founded by the Capetian kings, rose in prestige, and the papal court was at its highest level of influence. The era was marked by the rise of feudalism, and many religious and literary works were composed, such as The Song of Roland and The Romance of the Rose. Wars were fought both within and outside France, as a result of alliances made between rival powers. The period also saw the rise of the merchant classes, and the development of cities and towns across the kingdom.
