Dresden is a city located on the Elbe River in Germany. The most central part of the city is historically known as Altstadt (Old Town). This is the medieval center, home to numerous important landmarks. One of these is Frauenkirche, the traditional symbol of Dresden. This large Lutheran church, with its magnificent dome, is Cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Dresden-Meissen. It was originally built in the 18th century, however, it had to be almost wholly reconstructed after being heavily damaged during World War II. Other nearby attractions include the Semper Opera House and Zwinger Palace, a Baroque palace with extensive gardens, art galleries and museums. Just north of the city center is the vibrant shopping district of Neustadt (New Town), home to trendy restaurants, cocktail bars, and countless art galleries. In addition, the district boasts some of the best-preserved buildings of the city, such as the Landhaus Neustadt and the Alter Louis. The city’s old Jewish quarter is also located in Neustadt and includes the Synagogue of Dresden, a traditional synagogue rebuilt after being destroyed in the war. Finally, North of Dresden is the delightful Prohlis district, which is well-known for its lush parks and walking trails.
