CR 490 is an ultra-high-strength, high-performance hardfacing alloy from Edsyn. It is a medium alloy steel consisting of an austenitic matrix with an iron-based metallic chrome-nickel-molybdenum binder. The microstructure ensures a low hardness and a high tensile strength. CR 490 has a nominal hardness of 42 HRC and can be used in various applications on a variety of base materials, including tool steels, stainless steels, and other medium to high alloy materials. Its main uses are surface wear, abrasion and corrosion resistance, especially when applied using manual or robotic arc-welding techniques. CR 490 has the highest tensile strength and wear resistance of the Edsyn hardfacing range, providing superior performance in processes such as hard metal machining, grinding, and metal forming.
