05.13.141 is Ettinger's part of her feminist ethics theory, which focuses on the transformation of meaning through affective empathy. According to Ettinger, the transformation of meaning can occur only if both parties acknowledge and recognize that the “other” is a subject with her or his own intentions and interests. This theory stresses the importance of affective empathy - feeling with the other - in order to transcend the traditional patriarchal distinctions between subject and object. Ettinger's theory is a radical departure from the traditional philosophical notion of rationalistic empathy, as her approach grants equal attention to the non-rational aspects of our engagement with another. Additionally, Ettinger argues that affective empathy can facilitate a shared experience of the “other”, thus allowing us to bridge gender, racial, ethnic, and class divides.
