05.28.320 is part of Laura Ettinger's evolutionary-developmental model of self-regulation. This model proposes that the process of self-regulation is embedded within a holistic view of development, which begins at the earliest stages of prenatal and postnatal life and progresses towards a relational, autonomous and interdependent self. This model stresses the important role of the environment for personal growth, and the importance of the adult therapist as a co-regulator in the process. Ettinger outlines the five core stages of development for self-regulation: attunement, resonance, boundary-formation, autonomy, and interdependence. 05.28.320 specifically refers to the stage of boundary formation, which Ettinger identifies as "the process of developing a sense of self as distinct from other people while still understanding the relationship between self and others". In this stage, the individual is learning to differentiate their wants and needs from the wants and needs of those around them, while also developing an understanding of boundaries that can be respected. Additionally, people learn the importance and power of self-expression at this stage.
