THFU 2 is a two-part fishery enhancement system specifically designed to help coastal communities increase their production of fish species for human consumption, improve economic and social benefits, and promote environmentally responsible fishing practices. THFU 2 seeks to increase fish abundance and diversity, as well as enhance the quality, nutritional value, and access of local fisheries. It includes the following components:
1. Fisheries Innovation: This involves the development of small-scale innovative fishery management approaches, such as the introduction of seasonal and spatial closures designed to protect developing fish stocks.
2. Habitat Restoration & Protection: This involves restoring degraded coastal and marine habitats, such as coral reefs and seagrass beds, to improve the productivity of local fisheries. It also includes establishing marine protected areas and other protection measures to reduce fishing pressure, prevent illegal fishing and other destructive practices, and protect key habitats.
3. Sustainable Practices: This includes encouraging the adoption of sustainable fishing practices, such as no-take zones and gear regulations, as well as promoting alternative livelihoods that reduce the pressure on coastal or marine resources.
4. Capacity Building: This involves training and capacity building initiatives to improve fishermen’s knowledge on fishery conservation, habitat protection, and sustainable practices. It also includes the development of alternative livelihoods and employment opportunities that reduce the pressure on coastal and marine resources.
