ZSM-85 Jabel

The Jabel ZSM-85 is a multi-shot, selective fire, semi-automatic firearm designed and developed in the former Soviet Union in the late 1980s. It is chambered for the 5.45x39mm Soviet rifle cartridge and it is still in service today. The weapon was designed to be a “last ditch” option for use in combat, where its relatively lightweight design makes it an effective and inexpensive close combat weapon. It fires from a closed bolt and operates from a blowback system and can be set to fire in either single shot or fully automatic modes. The ZSM-85 is fitted with a side-mounted magazine which holds 17 rounds and is compact enough to be concealed in a variety of different holsters and clothing. The weapon is also equipped with carrying handle and adjustable (telescopic) stock for added portability. The barrels and cylinder heat shield of the ZSM-85 are constructed from stainless steel, while other components are made of alloy metal. The overall design of the Zsm-85 is quite simple and it contains very few moving parts, making it a very reliable weapon. It is capable of penetrating most body armor and is popular among Russian and former Soviet border guards and law enforcement personnel.
