Part 27273-3 of JHN, also known as the Joint Hazard Nomenclature (JHN) code, is used to classify and identify potential workplace, health and safety hazards. The code consists of four components: the hazard descriptor, the risk level, the prevention practices and the control measures. Hazard descriptor is the most critical aspect of the code as it serves to specify the source, the nature, and the extent of the hazard. The risk level, usually mentioned in terms of likelihood of the hazard materializing, is the next component and it is used to inform the response and risk management strategy. The prevention practices section shows the duties or precautions that need to be taken to manage the hazard and the control measures, which are instructions for engineering, administrative and procedural controls, outlines the steps and steps to be taken to eliminate or reduce the hazard.
