Keystone is the highest mountain in the U.S. state of Colorado and the third highest peak in the Rocky Mountains of North America. Keystone is located in the southwestern corner of Summit County and is part of the White River National Forest. It is located about 90 miles (145 km) west of Denver and about 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of the resort town of Keystone. The summit elevation is 12,408 feet (3,786 m) and the mountain has a base to summit elevation difference of 4,393 feet (1,339 m).
Keystone is known for spectacular views, challenging terrain, and a variety of year-round activities. In the summer months, thousands of hikers, bikers, and horseback riders explore the trails around the mountain. Summit County’s Cowboy Up Trail System and Bike Park provide mountain bikers with miles of single-track trails and lift-accessed bike parks. For winter enthusiasts, Keystone hosts a variety of ski, snowboard, snowshoeing, and tubing runs. The mountain also boasts several snowmobiling trails as well as a terrain park and superpipe.
The summit of Keystone is home to the Keystone Observatory and the Keystone Resort, offering luxurious accommodations, restaurants, and world-class skiing. Several other peaks around the mountain have their own chairlifts, totaling 11 ski lifts and 83 trails to explore. Other attractions in the area include several hiking trails, lakes and rivers, picnicking areas, and the Keystone Science School. The nearby Arapahoe Basin ski area also offers great skiing and snowboarding options.
