Metra is a commuter rail system in the Chicago metropolitan area that began in 1984. From 1999 to 2003, Metra extended its service to suburbs beyond the Chicago city limits, and opened a number of new stations. The system now serves over 300 communities and covers 11,000 route miles. During this period, Metra implemented Positive Train Controls, upgraded its fleet, and began offering onboard Wi-Fi. The last five years of this period also saw the successful completion of several major capital projects, including track and station upgrades, as well as the creation of the High Quality Metra Express Service between Chicago and its suburbs.
