Metra is a commuter rail agency responsible for providing service in Chicago, Illinois and its surrounding suburbs. The agency was created in 1984, and since has grown to serve over 250 communities. During the 1999-2008 time period, Metra extended service to several new areas, added more cars to their fleet, and invested in advanced technology. Additionally, the agency launched their Metra Up program to improve stations, expand parking, and add amenities such as bike racks and landscaping. This program was funded by a bond referendum and helped make the Metra system more accessible and enjoyable for riders.
