anthus
Miscanthus is an ornamental grass native to eastern and southern Asia, as well as parts of Eastern Europe. It grows as a perennial, forming dense clumps of foliage, and adds height and texture to flower beds, borders, and containers. The linear foliage comes in shades of green, yellow, silver, and bronze, depending on the variety. Many Miscanthus species produce plume-like flowers during the late summer and early fall. The stems and leaves of Miscanthus are stiff and may be used for weaving, basketry, and other crafts. Its extensive root system helps to inhibit erosion and is useful in controlling underground water tables. Miscanthus is adaptable to a variety of soils, and will tolerate drought, although it prefers moderate moisture. Pruning is necessary to keep Miscanthus in good form, and it responds well to division and lifting in the spring. It is usually pruned back several times in winter to stimulate new growth.
