’s long-term plan, MINIVAL (Metro Infrastructure and Vehicle Acquisition) is a wide-ranging initiative that strives to bring the subway system into a state of good repair. Key components of the program include the purchase of new rolling stock; the construction and rehabilitation of various infrastructure components such as track, power and signals and stations; and the introduction of new technology such as communications-based train control.
The main objectives of MINIVAL are to improve the safety and reliability of the subway system, and to increase the lifespan of the existing fleet by replacing aging and mechanically unsound equipment. The plan looks to create a sustainable, state-of-the-art, transit system that will meet the needs of commuters and those who use the subway for leisure or business purposes. Moreover, by introducing new technologies and improving the infrastructure, the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) hopes to reduce overcrowding, reduce delays and increase the efficient movement of passengers.
