The 74HC4040N is a 12-stage binary ripple counter from Nexperia. It features a high maximum operating frequency of up to 105 MHz and a low power consumption of 480 mW. The device can be cascaded or chained together as long as the first ripple count is not exceeded, making it ideal for applications such as sequencers or clocks. It consists of a 16-bit up/down counter and a 4-bit up/down counter, both with synchronous reset. The outputs toggle on the high to low transition of the clock inputs, creating a binary ripple effect. The outputs of this counter are active-low, allowing for more efficient use of the number of pins. This device is suited for applications that require a large amount of counters or high frequency pulse counts in a small package.
