DATASHEET ISL3160E FN8980 Rev.0.00 10kV ESD Protected, +125C, 40Mbps, 5V, Full-Duplex, Full Fail-Safe Mar 21, 2018 RS-485/RS-422 Transceiver The ISL3160E is a 10kV IEC61000 ESD protected, 5V Features powered, full-duplex transceiver that meets both the High ESD protection on RS-485 I/O pins: 10kV RS-485 and RS-422 standards for balanced Class 3 HBM ESD level on all other pins: >3kV communication. It also features a large differential output voltage and high data rate (up to 40Mbps) and is offered Large differential V 2.8V into 54 better noise OUT in the standard industrial (-40C to +85C) and extended immunity, or drive up to 6 terminations industrial (-40C to +125C) temperature ranges. The High data rates: up to 40Mbps low bus currents (+220A/-150A) present a 1/5 unit load to the RS-485 bus. This allows up to 160 Specified for +125C operation (FBZ), +85C (IBZ) transceivers on the network without violating the RS-485 11/13ns (maximum) Tx/Rx propagation delays 1.5ns specifications load limit and without using repeaters. (maximum) skew This transceiver requires a 5V 10% tolerance supply, 1/5 unit load allows up to 160 devices on the bus and delivers at least a 2.1V differential output voltage Full fail-safe (open, shorted, terminated/undriven) over this supply range. This translates into better noise receiver immunity (data integrity), longer reach, or the ability to drive up to six 120 terminations in star or other High Rx I to drive opto-couplers for isolated OL nonstandard bus topologies at the exceptional 40Mbps applications data rate. Hot plug - Tx and Rx outputs remain three-state SCSI applications benefit from the ISL3160Es low during power-up receiver and transmitter part-to-part skews. The Low quiescent supply current: 4mA ISL3160E is perfect for high speed parallel applications requiring simultaneous capture of large numbers of bits. Low current shutdown mode: 1A The low bit-to-bit skew eases the timing constraints on -7V to +12V common-mode input voltage range the data latching signal. Three-state Rx and Tx outputs Receiver (Rx) inputs feature a full fail-safe design, Operates from a single +5V supply (10% tolerance) which ensures a logic high Rx output if Rx inputs are floating, shorted, or terminated but undriven. Rx outputs Current limiting and thermal shutdown for driver feature high drive levels (typically >30mA at V = 1V) OL overload protection to ease the design of optically isolated interfaces. Pb-free (RoHS compliant) Hot plug circuitry ensures that the Tx and Rx outputs Applications remain in a high impedance state while the power supply stabilizes. Industrial robotics Driver (Tx) outputs are short-circuit protected, even for SCSI fast 40 drivers and receivers voltages exceeding the power supply voltage. Motor controller/position encoder systems Additionally, on-chip thermal shutdown circuitry disables the Tx outputs to prevent damage if power Factory automation dissipation becomes excessive.
