The S1000 is a performance-oriented drum computer and sampler originally released by British musical instrument manufacturer Akai in 1987. It was the first drum machine in Akai's S range of devices.
The S1000 is a standard 16-voice machine, with fully analog synthesis and 12-bit digital sampling technology. It features 24-bit memory, a 16-track digital-sequencer, 4-track onboard sample looping, and a 4-track multi-effect processor. The varied control options include adjustable MIDI timecode, monophonic velocity and pitchbender data, real-time audio outputs and a programmable user interface.
The S1000 was the first machine to introduce the concept of sampler-recording and synthesis in one device. This was an instrumental step in the history of sampling-based musical production. The S1000's strong combination of sampling, synthesis, and sequencing capabilities made it a seminal machine in hip-hop and dance music production of the late 80s and 90s. Artist's such as Beastie Boys and Nine Inch Nails used the machine to good effect.
