FS144 is an SAE International automotive engineering standard regarding safety aspects of roof strength. The standard was developed by the SAE Automotive Standards Committee, and applies to all makes and models of motor vehicles, but focuses primarily on passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, and light-duty truck vehicles. The standard sets forth requirements for roof strength, as well as test procedures to ensure compliance. The requirements include acceptance criteria for resistance to roll over and multiple load levels, as well as head injury criteria. The standard also sets forth recommendations for methods to achieve compliance, such as additional bracing, yields and reinforcements, and the use of high strength alloys. The purpose of FS144 is to establish a performance-based standard that sets a minimum level of safety for occupant protection during vehicle rollover events.
