It is a buck - boost converter to guarantee a proper LED Digitally programmable safety time-out in flash current control over all possible conditions of mode battery voltage and output voltage the output LED overtemperature detection and protection current control ensure a good current regulation with external NTC resistor over the forward voltage spread characteristics of Opened and shorted LED failure detection and the flash LED.
