1. Purification: This part of the 3CA3 lab involves the purification of a given compound through a series of chromatographic separations. Students will be asked to visually monitor each level of purification and use their skills to recognize when eluted fractions are pure or contaminated.
2. Characterization: In order to analyze the isolated compound, a variety of characterization techniques will be used in this section of the lab. Students will be asked to use analytical methods such as Thin Layer Chromatography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infrared Spectroscopy, Mass Spectroscopy, and Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy to identify the components in their sample.
3. Synthesis: In this part of the lab, students will be asked to synthesize a given compound from readily available starting material as well as use previously purified compounds in order to synthesize a more complex product. Synthesis techniques such as functional group transformations, multi-step reactions, and multicomponent reactions will be used to achieve this.
