Distance sensor modules are found in a variety of devices, from industrial machinery to automobiles and even smartphones. While distance sensor modules have an obvious function given their name, the specific ways in which they are used will depend on the device they’re in as well as the type of sensor module that is installed.
How do distance sensor modules work?
Distance sensor modules work by sending and measuring a signal, and subsequent changes in the signal. Distance sensor modules can track either, or both, the time it takes for an output signal to return, and the intensity of the signal when it bounces back to the sensor.
What is the difference between a distance sensor and proximity sensor?
Proximity sensors are typically used to identify whether an object is there or not, but not necessarily the distance between one object and another. In contrast, a distance sensor will measure distance and send alerts as this changes, such as in a parking aid in a vehicle.
What are the different types of distance sensor modules?
There are several different types of distance sensor modules. Ultrasound and infrared distance sensor modules are the most common, although LiDAR and “Time of Flight” sensors are also widely used.
Which type of distance sensor module is best?
It depends on what it will be used for and the device it is to be used in. Ultrasound sensors, for example, are sensitive to external conditions, whereas infrared sensors aren’t and are also more suitable for complex and unusually shaped objects and environments.
