An infrared emitter is a small, wired component that sends an infrared signal from source either to another device or to perform a specific function. Different infrared emitters may constantly work when switched on, be manually controlled, or be set to a specific emitting pattern, such as blinking.

What is an infrared receiver?

Infrared receivers are used in devices that are controlled by a remote. The infrared receiver takes the signal sent from the infrared emitter, decodes and sends this to the device to perform the desired function.

What is an infrared repeater?

An infrared repeater is a system that takes an infrared signal from an emitter and distributes it as an electrical signal to different components. Infrared repeaters are commonly found in smart technology with multi-room capabilities.

Does infrared bounce off walls?

Infrared works on a “line of sight” basis only, and typically only over short distances, even when a larger or more powerful infrared emitter is used. Infrared can bounce of walls and other hard surfaces to some degree, but not to an extent that you should rely on this as part of a process.
