AEDB-9140 Series Three Channel Optical Incremental Encoder Modules with Codewheel, 100 CPR to 500 CPR Data Sheet Description Features Two Channel Quadrature Output with Index Pulse The AEDB-9140 series are three channel optical incre- mental encoder modules offered with a codewheel. Resolution from 100 CPR to 500 CPR (Counts Per Revo- When used with a codewheel, these low cost modules lution) detect rotary position. Each module consists of a lensed Low Cost LED source and a detector IC enclosed in a small plastic Easy to Mount package. Due to a highly collimated light source and a unique photodetector array, these modules are extremely No Signal Adjustment required tolerant to mounting misalignment. Small Size The AEDB-9140 has two channel quadrature outputs plus Operating Temperature: -10C to 85C a third channel index output. This index output is a 90 TTL Compatible electrical degree high true index pulse which is gener- ated once for each full rotation of the codewheel. Single 5V Supply The AEDB-9140 is designed for use with a codewheel Applications which has an optical radius of 11.00 mm (0.433 inch). The AEDB-9140 provide sophisticated motion control de- The quadrature signals and the index pulse are accessed tection at a low cost, making them ideal for high volume through five 0.46 mm square pins located on 1.27 applications. Typical applications include printers, plot- mm(pitch) centers. ters, tape drives, and industrial and factory automation equipment. Note: Avago Technologies encoders are not recommended for use in safety critical applications. Eg. ABS braking systems, power steering, life support systems and critical care medical equipment. Coupled with a codewheel, these modules translate the rotary motion of a shaft into a three-chan- nel digital output. Resolutions Shaft Diameter* As seen in Figure 1, the modules (Cycle/Rev) contain a single Light Emitting Diode 02 - 3mm C - 100 CPR (LED) as its light source. The light is 04 - 5/32 in E - 200 CPR collimated into a parallel beam by 05 - 3/16 in F - 256 CPR means of a single polycarbonate lens 06 - 1/4 in G - 360 CPR located directly over the LED. Op- 11 - 4mm H - 400 CPR posite the emitter is the integrated 12 - 6mm A - 500 CPR detector circuit. This IC consists of 13 - 8mm multiple sets of photodetectors 14 - 5mm and the signal processing circuitry necessary to produce the digital Three Channel Encoder Modules with Codewheel, 11 mm Optical Radius waveforms. * Please contact factory for other shaft diameters The codewheel rotates between the emitter and detector, causing the Available Options light beam to be interrupted by the Shaft Diameter Options pattern of spaces and bars on the codewheel. Part No CPR 02 04 05 06 11 12 13 14 AEDB-9140 C The photodiodes which detect these interruptions are arranged in a pat- E tern that corresponds to the radius and design of the code-wheel. These F detectors are also spaced such that a G light period on one pair of detectors corresponds to a dark period on the H adjacent pair of detectors. A The photodiode outputs are then fed through the signal processing Block Diagram circuitry resulting in A, Abar, B, Bbar, I and Ibar. Comparators receive these signals and produce the nfi al outputs for channels A and B. Due to this inte- grated phasing technique, the digital output of channel A is in quadrature with that of channel B (90 degrees out of phase). Figure 1. 2
