Mystery House
In 194575, the Winchester Mystery House was sprawling over 161 rooms, including 40 bedrooms and 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, staircases leading nowhere, and secret rooms. Most of the buildng was completed to its original design, though some additions, such as the conservatory and a separate four-story tower, were added over the years. The architecture mixes Victorian and American Craftsman-style designs. There are also gardens, wood paneling and carvings throughout. Doors located in odd places, and some even inside closets, all on different levels. Some rooms contain one-way mirrors, secret passages, and trickery, all of which were thought to ward off evil spirits that Sarah believed inhabited the house. Other features include stained glass windows, balconies, intricately designed furniture, and more.
In addition to its numerous rooms, the Winchester Mystery House also has numerous attractions, including a 10,000-square-foot ballroom, a labyrinth of hallways, and many areas of historical significance. Visitors can also explore the 160 acres of gardens, groves, and vineyards surrounding the house. There are also daily guided tours of the house, which tell the tales of Sarah Winchester and her mystical abode.
