ELSEC5 is part of the Secura top-level security specification, developed by the Information Security Office of the Canadian Government. It is a security architecture and includes five elements: identification, authentication, authorization, encryption, and logging. Each element serves a different purpose in the overall security solution. Identification is focused on uniquely identifying users, authentication on verifying that the user is who they claim to be, authorization on the level of access granted to the user for the system, encryption on protecting data in transit and at rest, and logging on ensuring a record of all activity on the system. The ELSEC 5 elements collectively form a comprehensive security architecture that provides robust protection of the system, while reducing the costs associated with implementation and maintenance.
