Memory Modules
Memory modules, which you probably know better as RAM, are found in a variety of devices from smart TV’s to laptops, tablets, and smartphones. In a technical sense, memory modules are circuit boards containing integrated circuits (the RAM) which then install into memory slots in the specific device in which they will be used.
What are the types of memory modules?
There are several types of memory module, including TransFlash, SIMM (Single Inline Memory Modules), and DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Modules), alongside SRAM (Static RAM) and DRAM (Dynamic RAM). The type of memory module you need will depend on the device you have or are building.
What is the most common type of memory module?
DRAM is the most common type of memory module, and is typically found in most desktop computers, laptops, and games consoles. DRAM holds data for relatively short periods and refreshes regularly.
How do I identify what memory modules I have?
If you need to replace a memory module, use your device’s Task Manager or Settings to identify the type of memory module you have. Depending on your circuit and device, you may be able to replace a memory module with a higher memory or different type of module, but should consider the impact this may have on your device.
What is the function of a memory module?
In general, all memory modules store data temporarily while a device is running. SRAM memory may retain data for a longer period, in order to learn about your usage patterns to speed up processes or optimize your device.
